A ravine has more than one interpretations, and those differ from country to country.

Role
- There can be multiple such ravines, and they may form a network connecting multiple streams, and other water bodies.
- Birds, fishes, plants and amphibians thrive around these ravines.
- Birds nest, and they find fish and other food in and by the banks of the ravine.
- The amphibians lay their eggs in the ravine waters.
- Seeds of various plants and trees can be found in transition areas like ravines, thereby, the surrounding environment becomes rich in species.
- Fishes can migrate among such interconnected water bodies. This helps their breeding and nutrition.
Challenges
- Ravines(and many other water bodies) get choked due to pollution, erosion, land reclaimation, etc. This immediately affects the living beings depending on them.
- The flow of water on main ravines is generally monitored by devices. Changes in flow, water levels often indicate impending issues.
- The cleanliness and quality of water is maintained by these ravines. If they fail, the fishes and other amphibians die in large numbers.
