As old as an oak tree!

A 400-600 year old Oak tree.

It is a so-called giant, which means that it has a diameter of more than a metal chest height. This oak is pretty old, perhaps 400-600 years.

When measured in 2022, the diameter of this oak was 2.13 meters, the circumference 6.70 meters and the height 30 meters.

Oaks are a habitat for various living insects, fungi, lichens and mosses. Many birds, bats and other mammals live in old oaks that are hollow. More than 1,500 species are associated with oak. The old and rough oaks are the most valuable because they are home to the most plants and animals. Many of them are endangered species.

Especially valuable are the oaks that have mold in the cavities where many insects thrive. Mulch is a brown sawdust-like material that consists of dead wood, droppings and dead small animals such as insects.

Grows slowly

Oaks grow slowly – for this reason it is important that there are younger oaks nearby so that the endangered species have a new home when the old oak dies.

The oak spreads with its acorns. Often it is the nightingale that buries the acorns to have them as food at a later time. Some of the acorns remain in the ground and can grow into trees.

For an oak tree to produce acorns, it must be at least 50 years old. During a so-called acorn year, an oak can produce up to 500 kg of acorns, which even the wild boar loves. Examples of birds that nest in the hollows of oaks are barn owls, barn owls and starlings.
